No. You can come straight to me, with no referral from a GP or a school.

From age 8, a full diagnostic assessment is possible. Younger than 8, the Literacy and Learning Profile is the right step instead.

A full assessment usually takes around two and a half hours, with breaks whenever they are needed. The Literacy and Learning Profile takes around 90 minutes.

The assessment is still worth having. You leave with a clear picture of how your child learns and where support helps. If something is worth exploring further, I say so and point you to the right person.

Maths difficulties often grow from the same roots as literacy difficulties. Memory, processing and reading skills shape how a child manages Maths, from word problems to times tables. With this in mind, the assessment can also look at numeracy, problem-solving, and whether the basic operations have become automatic.

Dyscalculia is a different matter: where I suspect it, I refer you on to a specialist dyscalculia assessor.

The report is written to the current SASC guidelines, the standard that schools and universities recognise, and it is yours to use. For exam access arrangements, it can provide useful evidence, though under JCQ regulations, it is the responsibility of schools to determine which adjustments are appropriate, drawing on a range of evidence.

The full assessment fee of £595 and the Literacy and Learning Profile fee of £450 come with no extras or surprises.

The fees cover the free 30-minute consultation, the assessment session, liaison with school, a SASC-compliant report and the 45-minute video call.
